Health Benefits

The juice of the olive, otherwise known as olive oil, is a delicious source of antioxidants. This oil is monounsaturated, and it has a positive effect on the cholesterol level in our blood streams. Monounsaturated fats are not considered “essential”, but they should be an important part of our diets. These oils act to keep cholesterol from sticking to our artery walls. Not only that, but they help to control blood sugar, a big plus in a controlled carbohydrate diet. After all, when the blood sugar is under control, so is the insulin. And, insulin is a huge factor in our bodies’ storing food as fat.

Olives contain substances that are believed to help us to ward off cancer, polyphenols. Polyphenols give the olive its taste and aroma. One of the polyphenols found in olives is thought to act as an anti-inflammatory. Rich in immune-boosting antioxidants, the Greek diet provides cancer-fighting compounds, healthful omega-3 fatty acids and colon-cleansing fiber, which all help lower the risks of diet linked diseases, including heart disease, obesity and diabetes. A 2003 study conducted jointly by researchers at the University of Athens in Greece and Harvard University found that people who consumed a traditional Greek diet experienced a 33 percent lower risk of death from heart disease and a 24 percent lower risk of death from cancer.

Numerous studies, including one published by the American Heart Association, have shown that people who eat a high monounsaturated fat diet, such as the traditional Greek diet, have a lower risk of heart disease than people who eat more saturated fats, which include butter and margarine.

Researchers also found that people who consume olive oil have a lower risk for other diseases, too. Studies conducted at the Harvard School of Public Health indicate a link between olive oil consumption and a lower incidence of breast cancer and osteoporosis.

And a 1999 study conducted at the University of Athens Medical School showed that the Mediterranean diet may even help protect against rheumatoid arthritis. People who consumed olive oil and lots of cooked vegetables had a 39 percent lower risk of developing this joint disease.

When I tasted the first one, it was just if I was under an olive tree, picked it myself and put it into my mouth. What a freshness...Excellent job by the producer and thank you Oliveshop!
  • Kalamata olives for ever!

In my opinion Kalamata olives are the best in the world. There is a store in my neighborhood that has them, so I shop mostly from there. But I could't find organic Kalamata olives anywhere. So when I saw them on Oliveshop I couldn't resist the temptation...and I didn't regret it at all. Excellent taste.
